| Pat Fazio of Commack was
listening to WFAN Friday morning when he heard Jeff Wilpon make a shocking
offer. The Mets' chief operating officer told hosts Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton to select a fan to throw out the first pitch at Friday night's exhibition game at Citi Field between the Red Sox and Mets. Immediately Fazio thought of his 15-year-old daughter, Geena, a student at Commack High School and a member of the school's softball and volleyball teams. The two attend eight to 10 Mets games together most seasons, and had tickets for Friday night. "She's always said, 'How do you get to throw out the first pitch?' and I say, 'I don't know,''' Fazio said. "I see these auctions, but I can't afford to do that.'' Fazio thought it was "pretty neat'' for Wilpon to open the ceremonial pitch to a fan, so he called in, after others had offered Carton their wives or girlfriends in exchange for the honor. "I told them, 'I'm not even calling for myself; I'm calling for my daughter,''' he said. Esiason, who has a daughter around Geena's age and thus knows the importance of maintaining lines of communication between parents and teenagers, was impressed with the pitch. Just before 10 a.m., the station got back to Fazio with the news Geena was the choice. That began a series of texts messages between the two. "She was excited,'' he said. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime thrill.'' By 11 a.m. Fazio had heard from the Commack High principal asking for permission to tell the student body the news. Fazio, 43, a retired New York City policeman, said Geena's favorite players are Carlos Beltran and David Wright. "Wright's every girls' favorite,'' he said. Fazio said as a former cop he knows the importance of "keeping a good tab on your kids and keeping the communication free.'' He said Geena is a high honor roll student in addition to her sports activities. "I've been blessed,'' he said. |
